The United Nations (UN) is an international organization founded in 1945, in the aftermath of World War II, with the mission to maintain global peace and security, foster friendly relations among nations, and promote social progress, better living standards, and human rights. It was created by 51 countries determined to prevent future global conflicts and to build a platform for dialogue and cooperation. Today, the UN has 193 member states and works through various agencies and programs to address global challenges ranging from humanitarian crises to climate change.
In 2015, the UN adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all. The SDGs include targets like zero hunger, quality education, gender equality, clean water, climate action, and more. They are designed to be interconnected and ambitious, aiming to transform the world by 2030.
As of 2025, progress toward the SDGs is mixed. While some countries have made notable strides, only 17% of the targets are on track globally, and many goals are facing stagnation or regression due to conflict, inequality, and limited resources. Still, individuals can contribute by supporting sustainable businesses, reducing waste, advocating for policy change, volunteering, or even just spreading awareness. The UN encourages everyone to take part—whether through local action, education, or joining global campaigns like ActNow or The Global Goals. Every small step counts toward a more sustainable and just future.
